What Ice Fishing Jigs and Lures do you have in your Tackle Box

Using ice fishing jigs is very popular, not as popular as tip up fishing but often produces far better results.

There are countless styles of ice fishing jigs. Most of the ice jigs that I have tried work sometimes. Other times they don’t. There is no guaranteed lure for catching fish in the winter, or summer for that matter.

You can jig with great success of every species of game fish that live in our waters…..except of Burbot. At least I have never managed to catch a Burbot with anything but a smelt on a treble hook.

Any lure capable of being jigged vertically will work for ice fishing. You can use jig tipped with a minnow or with soft plastic bait. I often use both, a jig rigged with soft plastic and a minnow piggy backing it.

When jigging through the ice a very slow presentation is the best most of the time. There are days when a fast aggressive presentation is a must but those days are few and far between.

Minnow style vertical jigs are a great alternative to bait or other styles of jigs on many occasions. When jigging a minnow style jig a slow lift and a fast drop with a stop for a minute or so is usually the key for getting fish to bite consistently. People tend to fish minnow jigs aggressively and this in turn has a negative affect.

I am constantly experimenting with different types of lures and modifying existing lures to get better results. Sometimes results are better, often worse. When I find a lure that works great, I try and write it down, sometimes you forget what works the best.

So, keep your mind open to new ideas and try them when you find them.

Happy Fishing.
