Ice Fishing Perch - Great Fun and Easy to Find!

If you are ice fishing perch there is a relatively simple way of locating them. First thing I do when I hit the ice is to start drilling holes, don’t even get your tackle ready, don’t do anything, just get the auger ready.

Start by drilling holes in a square pattern. Start by drilling a straight line of holes then work outward in a pattern that will cover a good 40 to 50 feet across. Keep your holes 10 to 15 feet from each other and drill a lot of them.

I start out by fishing a “corner” hole of my square pattern and jig each hole until I get into fish. I like to jig with small spoons tipped with wax worms or small jigs tipped with minnows. Start jigging at the bottom and work your way up to the ice. If you don’t catch anything within 5 minutes move to the next hole in your pattern.

Ice fishing perch with a tip up is easy as well. Once I catch a fish in a hole I place my tip up there. I use a simple treble hook with a shiner most of the time. After I have my tip up set, I move to the next hole and continue to jig. I f I am still catching fish, I stay and jig there. If not, I keep going hole to hole until I start catching again. If the tip up is producing, I will leave it, if not it goes to the next hole that I am pulling fish through. The reason that this method works is because Perch are a schooling fish. Where you find one, you find many. Ice fishing perch is done with a light action ice rod with 2-4 lb test. You need a light action rod to feel the light bites that ice fishing perch can produce. Also the tackle that you will be using to catch Perch through the ice is very light and a light rod is necessary for imparting the correct action. Some of my favorite ice fishing perch lures are;
Small tube jigs
Jig heads tipped with minnows
Small spoons
Rapala Swim Baits
Wire Worms

Ice fishing perch fishing can be a great experience for you and the whole family. If you follow these simple techniques you should be catching all the Perch you can in no time at all.

Thanks for reading.
