Are Ice Fishing Shantys Right For Your Fishing Style?
Ice fishing shantys have a description that fits some where between an ice fishing house and an ice fishing tent. My take on an ice fishing shanty is that it has a more solid design, usually built out of wood, is hauled on a trailer or in the back of a truck and is sometimes a folding design.
The ice shanty often looks like a plywood box sitting on the lake, there usually configured so that 3 or 4 men can fish inside, Often the only thing inside other than the fishermen in a small propane heater.
Many ice fishing shanty’s are built on skis so that they can be pulled around the lake by a snowmobile or vehicle.
This type of shelter is more suited to the angler that likes to move his shack more often to chase fish down, and still stay out of the elements. This style of ice shanty gives the angler more of an advantage over that of the ice house user because of its mobility. The angler is able to follow the fish or fish a different spot on the lake quickly and effectively. You simply don’t have to wait for the fish to come to you.
The best ice fishing shanty is typically one that you build yourself. Most that are bought or poor design, poor quality and way more money than they are worth. You need to consider how many people will be in the shanty, who big you are (height and girth), where you are fishing, and how will you move it.
If you build a shanty for three men, make sure it can squeeze 4. If you do this, you will have a little bit of room for tackle, an underwater camera or a beer between you and the guy beside you.
You can design the shanty to be pulled by a snowmobile or quad, hand bombed to the lake or hauled in the back of a pickup truck. Make sure that your design will work with the vehicle that you will be taking it to the water with.
The time an ice shanty really shines is when the wind is howling and its getting dark, this type of shack will keep you warm, out of the wind, and fishing until you feel like going home. They can be as cheap or expensive as you would like, so get out there and get a basic shack, it will make all the difference in your ice fishing experience.
