What is an ice fishing shelter and why do you need one?

The Ice Fishing Shelter that you choose is highly dependent on the type of ice fisherman that you are. Some fishermen like to find their honey hole on the lake and sit on it for a week, catching what comes to them, others are the gun and run type of ice fisherman drilling 300 holes a day constantly attacking new spots on the lake, Chasing the bite all day hole after hole.

A quality fishing shelter is a necessity for the serious ice fisherman. Sure on a nice bright sunny day most people don’t mind being outside on the lake. Then there are days where the temperature drops, the wind starts to howl and when he snow hits your face it feels like a hundred tiny cuts. It is these days that you need an ice fishing shelter.

There are many different types of ice fishing shelters out there and just as many names out there for them.

Eskimo Ice Fishing Shelter The most common names are;
Ice fishing shack
Ice fishing hut
Ice fishing house
Ice fishing shanty
Ice fishing tent
Dark House

It depends on where you live as to what people will call them, They all serve the same purpose. That purpose being is to give you shelter and or give you a dark environment to fish from.

I most often use my shack as a shelter only. It keeps me out of the elements and I can fish comfortably in jeans and a t-shirt if I wish to.

The other use is to keep it dark. When you have a dark area to fish from, and it is daylight, you can see into the water through your ice fishing hole. Then you can watch the fish as they are taking your bait or lure.

I use an underwater camera for this, therefore I might as well keep the shack windows open.

Here is a brief description of each type of shelter.

Ice Fishing House

Ice Fishing Shanty

Ice Fishing Tents

In Alberta a “shack” as most of us call them included all of the above.

Any of the types of shelters are also considered dark houses.
