New to Northern Pike Fishing? Here is What A Basic Setup Should Include

If you are primarily northern pike fishing then I would suggest a medium heavy action rod in at least a 6 foot length with a slightly fast tip.

You need a good quality fishing line that has nice abrasion resistant qualities. Monofilaments are still the most common types of line used when northern pike fishing, with a steel leader attached to the lure end. I prefer super braid type of lines because of there heavier lb test in a smaller diameter line. With super braid lines you do not need to set the hook nearly as hard because they have much less stretch than monofilament lines, but if you get snagged on something in the water you can break your rod before you break your line, its best to cut your line and spend the money on new line rather than a new rod.

A reel with steel mounting base is necessary because a big northern pike can snap a plastic or cheaply made reel fairly quick if the drag is set to high. I like a reel that has a rear drag for beginners because they are easy to adjust on the fly. Some new fisher people like to set there drag high then lower it once the hook is set so not to rip the hook out of the fish.

Many women that are northern pike fishing are naturally smaller in stature with less arm strength than the average male. Many women I fish with prefer a medium/medium rod in a 5’8” length. The slightly shorter rod with a bit of a faster action lets them cast most large fishing lures and keeps people from fatiguing as fast as with a longer heavier pole. If you find that fishing becomes a difficult task after a while consider going with even a lighter rod yet.
